UAE's Continuing Non-Oil Economic Diversification: Building a More Resilient and Competitive Economy

The UAE continues to strengthen its position as a global business and trade hub, with non-oil industries playing an increasingly important role in economic development. Through investment in manufacturing, trade, financial services, construction, technology and logistics, the country is building a more diversified economic structure and creating new opportunities for international businesses.

Non-Oil Sectors Drive Economic Development

According to the UAE's Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre, the country's real GDP reached AED 961.9 billion in the first half of 2026. Non-oil GDP grew by 1.8% year-on-year, accounting for 79.2% of the national economy, compared with 78.1% in the same period of 2025.

Trade remained the largest contributor to non-oil GDP, followed by financial and insurance activities, construction, manufacturing and real estate. These sectors demonstrate the breadth of the UAE's economic base and its ongoing transition towards multiple sources of growth.

Manufacturing, Technology and Infrastructure Create New Opportunities

Manufacturing is an important pillar of the UAE's diversification strategy. Continued investment in industrial capacity, advanced technologies and infrastructure is supporting the development of a more competitive production base.

At the same time, digital transformation, artificial intelligence and innovation are creating opportunities across traditional industries. Businesses are increasingly looking for solutions that improve productivity, strengthen supply chains and support more efficient operations.

Infrastructure development and logistics capabilities also reinforce the UAE's role as a regional distribution centre, connecting manufacturers and suppliers with customers across the Middle East, Africa, Asia and other international markets.

International Trade Strengthens the UAE's Global Position

The UAE's strategic location, modern ports, extensive air connections and business-friendly environment make it an important gateway for international trade.

The country continues to expand economic partnerships and improve market access through international trade agreements. These efforts support cross-border commerce, encourage investment and help local businesses reach new markets.

The UAE's economic diversification is a long-term transformation rather than a short-term trend. Although external uncertainties and regional disruptions can affect individual sectors, the growing contribution of non-oil industries demonstrates the importance of building a broader and more resilient economic foundation.

As the country continues to invest in trade, manufacturing, technology and infrastructure, the UAE is well positioned to remain an important destination for international investment and a key hub for global business cooperation.
